10 Minute Introduction to 3D AutoCAD: Turning 2D Floor Plans into 3D Models

Most AutoCAD architects need to create geometry in 3D at some point. Sometimes they need to show a client or community what spaces will look like when built. Sometimes they need to gain a better understanding of the environment they are designing.

Fortunately AutoCAD makes it easy to convert 2D floor plan 3D geometry.

Converting 2D floor plan into a 3D model

The first step in creating 3D models from simple floor plan showing the top (or plan) view of the floorplan in model space. Then, from the View menu, choose 3D Views and Southeast Isometric. Then you will see a 3D view apartment layout.

Choose the contours of the wall in plan view. Then, from the Modify menu, choose Properties. Change Thickness from the line representing the height of the walls. Press ESC to show you are done modifying the contours of the wall.

Select the lines that represent one or more window sills. Changing the thickness of their property to them the right height. You will need to determine the right height for each window sill, which may require multiple selections.

Select the window and door headers. Set your assets Elevation to lift them up off the ground. Set its thickness to determine how widespread they are.

By this point you should have a pretty reasonable 3D wireframe model.

See shaded views of your 3D models

After you convert 2D floor plan into a 3D model, you might want to look at the model with hidden lines removed. To do so, at the command prompt, type HIDE .

to display the shadow of view of the same model, from the View menu, select Shadow and select one of the options hladu.Boja applied to walls, headers and sills will be the color of the lines used to create them.

What next?

using the techniques covered in this tutorial you should find it easy to create 3D thick lines for the production of windows and glass doors.

AutoCAD has more sophisticated tools to create and export photo-realistic images of 3D models. It also has other commands (such as UCS and region) that will create the position of the 3D geometry.

When you feel comfortable conversion of 2D floor plans into 3D models, it will take only a few hours to master the more advanced tools.

  1. I need to be able to draw a floor plan of my house. I only want something simple but it must be to scale, so I need to be able to put in dimensions for walls etc.. . I don't want a CAD type program just something straightforward that will allow me to draw a simple scale plan. I've tried MS paint but that doesn't allow you to put in dimensions..
